TWO YEARS
At around two years you can expect your child to be able to do the following:
Physical
- Runs well and can avoid objects
- Tries to kick a ball
- Climbs on and off furniture
- Walks up and down stairs, holding on to rail, one step at a time
- Throws ball overhand
Cognitive
- Begins to show preference which hand to use
- Holds pencil by using thumb and first two fingers
- Copies lines and circles
- Can build a tower of four or more bricks
- Can name items in picture books
Social and emotional
- Likes to pretend and role play
- Inquisitive but still no sense of danger
- May have tantrums
- Demands a lot of attention
- Will parallel play – plays beside other children but does not actually play with them
- Drinks from a cup with no lid
Speech and language
- Follows simple instructions
- Has a vocabulary of 50 plus words
- Will put two-three words together
- Can name well known objects
